Some people find the discomfort of laser tattoo removal a bit too much, especially in overly sensitive areas and you may use a numbing cream.  ERAZALASER recommends numbing cream to diminish the discomfort. However, no matter what you may have been told only 3 people are authorised to apply numbing cream to your skin:

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) regulates these products in Australia. The 5% formula is sold in pharmacies where you can get instructions on the correct use of the product. In the pack, you will find detailed instructions on how to apply it. Follow the instructions which advise “ Apply a thick layer of cream to the skin, under an occlusive dressing.”

To help you understand what “thick” means we have included an image of ERAZALASER client, Kellie. She is happy to share her experience with the numbing cream.  Cover the cream with an occlusive dressing such as Gladwrap® once it’s applied.

We advise clients that “thick” means as thick as a 50 cent piece. You should also apply the numbing cream beyond the edge of the tattoo. Most importantly, apply the cream at least one to one and a half hours before your visit to ERAZALASER. We will remove the dressing for your laser tattoo removal treatment.

While there is a variety of numbing creams available from pharmacies and online, we recommend that you buy local so that you know exactly what you are buying. Therefore, ask questions before you purchase any product.

There are claims for other systems using skin abrasion and injections of proprietary ingredients espousing “Laser Free, Pain Free” tattoo removal but with no clinical trials referenced for these claims. It is also claimed that “laser tattoo removal breaks down pigment ingredients and deposits them in critical organs of the body” – scary stuff – if it were true. The truth is that YES the laser does break the ink into smaller particles. That is its purpose. The smaller ink particles are then eliminated from the body via the lymphatic system much like the body eliminates infection from the body.

Tattoo Removal Training is Critical

There are two critical components in successful tattoo removal with a laser. Firstly and the most obvious is the type of laser used. It has been said by a senior staff member of Radiation Health Queensland that if a laser can shatter tattoo ink then it is a Class 4 laser. There are different Classes of laser for cosmetic and therapeutic purposes ranging from Class 1 to Class 4 lasers which are strictly regulated. To operate a Class 4 laser the technician must undergo extensive training before obtaining an Unrestricted Licence to operate the laser without supervision. It’s a bit like qualifying for a pilot’s licence with all hours under supervision being recorded in a log book and endorsed by the senior trainer.

The second and less obvious component of successful tattoo removal is the skill of the laser technician. However before you even consider the skill level make sure that the technician that is about to target your skin with a powerful laser apparatus has undertaken the tattoo removal training required by Radiation Health Queensland. When applied to your tattoo the Nd: YAG laser targets the ink particles which lay in the dermis and shatters those particles into smaller fragments which can then be eliminated from your body. Unlike the sculptures, your body takes time to dispose of your unwanted ink and that’s why your treatment sessions will be scheduled at 5 to 8 week intervals.

One can imagine that before lasers were allowed near these priceless works there was an intensive consultation period where the process was discussed and all the benefits and risks were outlined. Research conducted by the Pew Research Center in America on tattoos and tattoo removal trends  showed that the least important factor in getting a tattoo was the price. When people were asked – What is the most important thing to consider when getting a tattoo, 49% replied, the reputation of the tattoo artist. Another 43% think a tattoo with a personal meaning is the most important factor.

US consumers spend $ 1.65 billion annually on getting inked and there are over 21,000 tattoo studios spread across the country according to the Pew research.

In Australia there are more than 1,000 studios and the industry turns over approximately $100 million annually according to research conducted in 2014 by Ibis World.

The recognized world standard for laser tattoo removal is the Q-Switched Nd: YAG laser  developed for the tattoo removal industry. The laser has variable wavelengths of light which target different ink colors. It causes minimal discomfort and less trauma to your skin.
